National Pharmacare in B.C.

by Arvin | Feb 26, 2026 | Blog

Most B.C. residents with diabetes or menopausal symptoms have trouble paying for prescription medications.

This happens because insulin costs between $900 and $1,700 per year.

Metformin costs about $100 per year.

SGLT-2 inhibitors range from $100 to over $1,000 per year.

Many drugs require Special Authority approval.

Some brand names cost far more than generics.

When this occurs, you face high out-of-pocket costs, deductibles under your current PharmaCare plan, and delays in access.

If not fixed, it leads to skipped doses, untreated symptoms, and long-term health decline.

Starting March 1, 2026, B.C. launches the National Pharmacare Plan NP.

Plan NP covers the full cost of many diabetes medications and menopausal hormone therapy.

Full coverage includes:

  • Insulins
  • Metformin
  • Glyburide
  • Gliclazide
  • Dapagliflozin
  • Empagliflozin
  • Empagliflozin with metformin

Some medications still require Special Authority.

Some hormone therapies receive partial coverage.

Generics cost 15% to 90% less than brand names.

Under the Low Cost Alternative program, your pharmacist switches eligible prescriptions to a fully covered generic.

You must enroll in the Medical Services Plan of B.C. to qualify.

We specialize in PharmaCare and MSP enrollment support to achieve full prescription coverage under Plan NP.

I recommend our BC Pharmacare Enrollment Support Service because it guides you through MSP confirmation, coverage checks, and generic substitution requests.

The benefit of fixing high prescription costs is:

  • $0 cost for many diabetes drugs
  • Automatic transfer of some existing coverage
  • Fewer Special Authority requirements for select medications
  • Lower annual drug spending
  • Clear guidance on what your plan pays

You gain predictable access to essential treatment.

You reduce financial strain.

You protect your long-term health.

Are you enrolled in MSP?

Do you know which of your prescriptions will move to 100% coverage on March 1, 2026?

Which allows you to achieve stable treatment without the burden of high medication costs.
